Watercolor Supply List

These supplies can be purchased at Michael’s Craft Stores, Hobby lobby, United Art and Education, Prizm, or from any artists catalog. You may want to watch the newspapers for coupons and sales.

My recommendation: It is not necessary to get the very best products - but avoid cheap paint and brushes they will only disappoint an frustrate you!

  • Sketchbook
  • pencil
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Watercolor paint palette
  • Water containers - large coffee cans, any kind of bucket, plastic ice creams tubs, etc.
  • Sponge(s) - synthetic and or natural
  • Paper towels - Viva is a good brand because it doesn’t leave a lot of fibers behind
  • Watercolor paper or pads (rag paper type)  - a pad that is glued on all sides works very well
  • Drawing board - masonite type with handle cut out for easy carrying
  • Soap for cleaning brushes - any brand of liquid dish soap

Paint: (You do not have to limit yourself to the colors on this list.)

  • Alizarin crimson
  • A bright red - cadmium red or cadmium red light
  • Burnt sienna
  • Raw sienna
  • Raw umber
  • Yellow ochre
  • A bright yellow - lemon yellow or cadmium yellow
  • Hookers green or sap green
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Cerulean blue
  • Payne’s Gray
  • Chinese white

Brushes: (Look for soft hairs with a springy quality (when the hairs are pushed and then released they pop back into shape readily)

  • A large flat brush - 1” or larger
  • #12 flat
  • #10 round
  • #6 round

These brushes will give you a good start but, you can never have too many brushes!
