Oil Painting Supply List

These supplies can be purchased at Michael’s Craft Stores, Hobby Lobby, United Art and Education, Prizm, or from any artists catalog. You may want to watch the newspapers for coupons and sales.

My Recommendation: It is not necessary to get the very best products - but avoid cheap paint and brushes they will only disappoint and frustrate you!

  • Sketchbook
  • Pencil
  • Canvas - 12” X 16” or larger
  • Odorless mineral spirits - art store type is better than hardware store type
  • Linseed oil
  • 2 Metal or glass cups or jars - baby food size
  • 2 large jars (glass only) - preferably wide mouth (1 for painting medium and 1 for brush cleaner)
  • Palette knife for mixing paint
  • Palette - white enamel, glass, or pad type
  • Rags
  • Paper towels - Viva is best - it does not leave a lot of fibers behind
  • Soap - I use Murphy’s Oil Soap, but you can use a cake of soap such as Ivory or an art store type of brush cleaner

Paint : (You don’t need to limit yourself to the colors on this list)

  • 1 large tube of titanium white

Small tubes of:

  •   Burnt umber
  •   Burnt sienna
  •   Raw sienna
  •   Yellow ochre
  •   lemon yellow
  •   Cadmium yellow
  •   cadmium red light
  •   Alizarin crimson
  •   ultramarine blue
  •   Cerulean blue
  •   Sap green
  •   Viridian (green)

Brushes: (You may buy just these sizes I have listed here but, there is no such thing as too many brushes!)

  •   Natural (hog bristle)
  •   Flats - sizes 4,6,8, 10  - these sizes are approximate
  •   Rounds - a couple different sizes such as 4 or 6
