ABOUT  THE ARTIST:

John Schaefer:
John Schaefer (1949- ), earned his B.A. in Fine Arts and English from IU-Bloomington in 1971. He received his Masters in Arts Education from Herron School of Art in 1981.

John Schaefer works on a sketchWinner of the Sursum Corda Award from Bethlehem Lutheran Church, John has exhibited in the Arts in Religion Festival and the Hoosier Salon. He has won awards for “Best Use of Illustration”, “Best of Theme”, and “Mayor’s Choice” four out of the last five years at the Riley Festival.

He also recently won the “Reading Bug” Competition sponsored by the Hancock County Public Library. He shares his talents as an art teacher with the Indianapolis Public Schools and does freelance work for individuals and local arts groups.

John is also known for his poetry, having had his work published in several literary magazines including Alkahest and Indiana Writes. He won the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Poetry on the Buses contest three years running in the late 80s and has won awards at the Riley Festival as well.

Schaefer is married to Christine and has two children, Charles and Benjamin.
